2013 Travel Dispatch #18 (Olgas to King's Canyon)

Still in Cairns and getting ready to go diving very early in the morning so this is going to be short and sweet, really. A bunch of photos, but not much commentary, really.

This is Nick, he was our guide for several of the tours we did while at Uluru. On this particular day we went explore another upthrust area near Uluru called the "Olgas". The native name is Kata Kjuta, but they're better known by the English name. We did two hikes by and into them and these are some pics.

We stuck around long enough to catch the sun peeking out of the clouds just at the right time to spotlight the rock formation. Another sunset success. The weather was being somewhat uncharacteristically cloudy and not everyone was having such luck.

This day was perhaps the hottest we experienced during our stay in the interior. It got up to about 40 degrees C. These Crested Pigeons were sitting with their wings held away from their bodies just trying to keep from being par-broiled on the spot. Pigeon Pie anyone?

The next day we got on another bus and headed for King's Canyon.

Their  buses are very large and quite comfortable. We not there during high season so the buses were also mostly empty.

We stopped at a couple of wide spots in the road, they call them "Stations" thereabouts.

Check out the lady to the left of center. She's taking a picture of the place with her iPad. We saw a lot of that. There was not shortage of cameras around, but there was an incredible variety of them.

According to our driver, the name of the port may have been a bit of false advertising.

This little guy was hopping around in the parking lot. Near as I could find out it is a Magpie Lark.

The trip to King's Canyon was over three hours long. This is what a lot of the country we went through looked like.

The accommodations at King's Canyon.

Dinner time there. The next day we did the rim walk. It was very good exercise but will have to wait until we get back from diving to get it on the blog. Rain is in the forecast here, but we don't really care as we'll be underwater anyway a good deal of the time.
